What is Seborrhoeic dermatitis


  • Redness & scaling (greasy) in region where sebaceous glands are most active
  • More common in males
  • Prevalence 1:25
  • Increased incidence in HIV + population & Parkinson's disease
  • Inflammatory reaction related to proliferation of the yeast Malassezia furfur (in sebum)
  • Tendency to reoccur


Site of predilection


  • scalp, forehead, face, chest, armpits, under the breasts, groins
  • Mild cases have dandruff and patches of flaky skin on the face
  • If the condition becomes worse a more extensive rash can occur
  • Palpable papular rash or round or oval patches of red, scaly, greasy skin
  • Yellow-brown crusts may form
  • The rash may become itchy

Help for Seborrhoeic Dermatitis

  • Antifungal shampoo 2-3 times a week to hairy areas
  • Antifungal cream once or twice daily
